25 Days of Christmas: Day 2

If you know me, you know I’m cheap. Spending money on things I (or someone I love) won’t use drives me crazy. Like yes, I make crazy impulse purchases, but I do use most of them. This is my first year that I’m really on my own, so I decided to make a Christmas card for Leslie and me. Rather than the traditional printed card you have to mail, that I’m assuming most people would just throw away after the holidays, why not save the money and put it on the internet? No one’s forgotten, everyone has it, it’s free and simple.

I decided to use Canva because it’s easy to use, especially since I already frequent the site. If you don’t use Canva (@Bloggers) use it. It’s how I make 99% of the covers for my blog posts. To edit the pictures I used Fotor, a Windows app that makes editing photos very quick and easy. The nice thing about Canva is that you have the option to scroll through their templates, some are free, some cost money. I decided to start with a blank slate.

I added grids which I could then just drag my pictures into.

We took about 30 pictures to come up with three.

This is what the final looks like in Cavna. To find the background and words, I simply typed “Christmas” into the search bar and both turned up, I thought they fit my brand.

So here’s my final card:

Enjoy :) Merry Christmas from Leslie and me.

Late Night Blogging with Mary: Part 25

late night blogging with mary

Hello everyone, it’s been a while. The end of the semester got to be way too much for me to handle this year, but I just emailed my professor my final project so I’m done. I am officially a senior and thank goodness for that. Towards the end it was often a struggle to make it through.

This year was so full of blessings, however I will leave those all to another post dedicated to my amazing school year. This post is weird. I was gone for so long, it just feels weird coming back.

I say this every summer, and every summer it starts but doesn’t quite finish and that would be the revamping of Mary’s Average Adventures. This summer I hope to improve on: more fashion-y style posts, DIY, and hopefully, a lot more adventures.

Blogging has been a struggle for me. Most recently, I’ve become a sell-out to the Odyssey and that has taken a lot of my ideas too. I don’t know why I signed up for it, but I try my best to give it a better name. I just have a lot of issues with the way it’s run and how people perceive the site in general. How many letters to the ex-boyfriend can I read? Why do I have to share my articles on Facebook?

I also broke up with my boyfriend. That’ll be another post about the internet and relationships because it’s interesting.

Right now, I’m just trying to recover. I’m only home for about a month until I go back to school to do research with one of my professors and another student. The plan for this month is scrapbooking, reading, and lots of me time.

This is more of an I’m back to blogging post than a LNBM I suppose haha. However, I’m back, I’m a senior, and I’m so glad I’m on break.

DIY T-Shits

As an avid crafter, I am surprised with myself that I have yet to do a real DIY post. I guess that’s because my crafting isn’t typically follow step by step directions, it’s more like swipe some colors of paint on a canvas and see if it turns out pretty or not. Well, last week  I was inspired by Grace Helbig’s “DIY + ACCESSORIES + ROOM DECOR” video. It was hilarious and kind of poking fun at beauty gurus, which I’m sure some people found offensive, but I don’t think that was the intention of it. I personally thought it was hilarious so I wanted to do some iron on t-shirts like she did in the video.

For this DIY you need scissors, transfer paper, and any shirts you want to decorate. I don’t know what kind of transfer paper I bought, it’s from Michaels, it came for both light and dark shirts so I bought the multi pack, I wouldn’t recommend this one. I wish I would’ve done more transfer paper research before purchasing. You also need a hard surface, I took the cover off the ironing board and used that, you also need an iron.

Okay so my first attempt was a complete flop. Keep in mind, these pictures are taken on my tripod. All of my friends live in other states plus everyone is going back to college plus I don’t really let people touch my camera to be honest.  So the pictures are at odd angles and weird lighting, I did my best during the editing process but you know, stuff happens.

So this was my first attempt at doing the iron on. It said not to mirror the image (I should’ve) also it just didn’t come off correctly. It was frustrating.

This is the only picture of my second attempt because it didn’t turn out at all because I didn’t follow the directions, make sure you follow the directions!

My third attempt was actually successful! Yay!! So basically, for all of my picture editing, I use the site PicMonkey, highly recommended if you don’t have photoshop or anything fancy. It’s free or you can get all it has to offer for $33 a year, or something else for each month, but per year is cheaper so I do that. They also have stickers and stuff you can use to design things, like my titles that I do, (this sounds sponsored, I wish it was) so I used the stickers for some of the iron ons, like this cat. Basically, I just cut it out of the transfer paper and followed the directions this time and it worked!

Second attempt at the grey shirt worked! I love the smirking emoji so I just used that one.  I just Googled it, like I did for the failure of the map above.

With my second attempt for the white shirt, I learned that you can’t always come out successful. I tried for days to get the original blue out of the shirt with Goo Gone, nail polish remover, and rubbing alcohol, I came to the conclusion that it was good enough and the black would over power it. It turns out that it didn’t and that the black didn’t work well either. I would not recommend the light color transfer paper as it did not work nearly as well as the one for dark colors. I also burned the shirt but I think some Goo Gone didn’t come off well in the wash and that’s what burned. I’ll still wear this as pajamas but not out and about like I will with the other two.

Here I am modeling all three shirts, I’m being very much a poser here. You can also sorta see my new hair cut, you can definitely see how short it is now. I like how the grey smirk emoji one turned out the best, the cat shirt is a small, which always stretches over the chest area so that’s not as comfortable. I might actually wear the smirk one on the plane to Ireland because it’s comfy and I see it as a conversation starter.

Let me know if you decide to make anything similar, while it’s frustrating, it is a lot of fun.

Late Night Blogging with Mary: Part 6

Well we are back with some LNBM. Let me tell you bank and rain jacket shopping are both a lot harder than expected, but the bank has been easier. This rain jacket is killing me, I think it’s because it’s not rain jacket season and every single one is the most vibrant colors. So frustrating.

It’s officially August and normally I would be getting ready to leave for school in three weeks. This year, I have five, almost six. Which is both a good and bad thing. I am so ready for all the study abroad information just to be here. I hate waiting and this is a lot of waiting for me. I’m also ready to get there. Like yes, I will miss everyone here but I’m very ready for this huge adventure. I think it’s because I’m always ready for the next adventure, but this one is just so big and so full of anticipation that I’m getting to the anxiously awaiting the departure point.

Traveling is super weird though and like the whole process. I’m flying out of New York because it’s cheaper, but I have a three hour layover in Philly (a mere hour drive from my house) because it saves so much money it makes more sense. I just don’t understand that, but I guess it’s whatever. Also it’s weird that it will take less than six hours to get there and it’s thousands of miles away.

I have hardly crafted all summer. That’s a fact. How have I done it? I need to like watercolor or something tomorrow because I need to release the creative tension that has been building up. I also was going to start an etsy shop of scarves and such, but I only have one and two halves, so I guess that’s not happening this summer. Maybe next year, or this winter depending on what happens with schedules and whatnot.

Do you know what’s also interesting? Time zones. I still hate them. Also anything that has to deal with the concept of time. It’s so weird and man constructed, it’s so unnecessary. We just need a standard time world round, I don’t care about the sun rotation, I just feel like that would make sense, but that’s probably just me.

What are your late night thoughts?

Late Night Blogging with Mary: Part 5

Okay so I’m regretting numbering these. Like say I blog for another 80 years, Late Night Blogging with Mary (hereinafter referred to as LNBM) there could be hundreds of these, that’ll be embarrassing, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

Can I just say, how much I miss my best friend. I’ve been home for a while now, I’m not really sure how long, but I’m still not used to Eric just not being around. It’s weird going from constant to phone calls and text messages.

I really want a cat. I think it’s because I’m not allowed to have one. Growing up we had my dog, and then he died this year so now I just want something and I think I want a cat because I never had one. Like they just look so cuddly. It’s kind of like when I get baby fever, I think I have cat fever. All I want to do is cuddle cats.

It’s very interesting to me what is sold for dorm rooms. Like there are things that I see and think “Oh yes, that would be useful if my room was three times bigger.” I feel like it’s kind of a ploy to get freshman to buy things they don’t need and won’t use, but that’s just my opinion.

Pinterest moms. HOW. I love to craft but those Pinterest moms are insane, like in the best way possible. I typically assume they are stay at home moms who have a lot of time- I’m probably wrong but I have created a stereotype in my mind that I’m going to stick with. Some of those crafts are just insane. I am curious as to if it actually saves money. Sometimes I think what it costs to make some of the stuff you might as well just buy it, however, that defeats the fun of it. I want to be a Pinterest mom, minus the stereotype that they are stay at home moms. They are admirable and creative. I wonder if their colleges had a Martha Stewart major…

Okay I’m cutting it short tonight. I’m tired and ready for bed.

Majoring in Martha Stewart (Minus the Jail-Time)

I’m really obsessed with being crafty, like painting, creating, and like just being crafty in case you weren’t aware. Like Michael’s is one of my favorite stores in the whole world, which I’ve definitely written about before, but I could spend hours in there, mostly because I can never decide on what I want to craft. My favorite section of the store though is her line of supplies, which I never buy because I can buy two or three of the cheap brand for the same price, but her stuff is just so pretty. Like her brand is just beautiful and I love it. The only thing wrong with her is that she was arrested, but if you’re going to get arrested it might as well be because you’re making money I guess. However, I would like to be her minus the jail time just because I would never last in jail. Ever.

I don’t know when I became obsessed with her because if I’m being honest, I can’t say that I have ever seen any of her shows or know much about her other than she basically a professional crafter. What on earth could be better than being a professional crafter? I type as I switch back and forth between typing and crocheting. I’ve been a 50 year old woman for about 5  years now.

It’s kind of been a joke with some of my friend and I about how to major in being Martha Stewart since it’s the only thing I know I want to do. I know I’m a communications major so maybe I’m on the right track to having a TV show. Jokes. I would never. No one would want to see me awkwardly sitting there improperly crafting and stuttering, also I wouldn’t want to do that either. However, I could tell someone what to do and what to craft without stuttering while they were on TV and not me.

Martha Stewart is my inspiration for all crafts, if she wouldn’t encourage it I won’t do it. Well with the exception of the boat which is still a work in progress but it will be finished and revealed soon (maybe). My advice is if a wooden boat costs $5 don’t get it, it will be more trouble than it’s worth, it is however, a great bonding experience with friends so maybe get it anyway.

I got to the rambling point and I know this post was odd enough to begin with and now everyone is going to think I’m crazy but oh well. I’m just going to stop while I’m somewhat ahead I suppose.,

DIY Christmas?

First of all I’m trying this new writer for the first time since they introduced it because I’m trying to like more things I don’t. I don’t know if I’ll ever like this if I’m being quite honest. This makes it a lot easier to accidentally publish something and I don’t like that. Anyway, I decided this year that I’m most likely doing a DIY Christmas for presents.

My friends Molly and Logan recently started a wedding Pinterest board for me (don’t worry or anything I’m not even close to being married or dating) while we were registering for classes earlier this week, I think if you click the link you can follow it if you want to know about my nonexistent wedding. Since I’ve been spending a lot more time on Pinterest even though it’s terrible sexist and disgusting, they have cool crafts which has lead me to think that I should do a DIY Christmas gifts this year.

I know it seems like a cheap way of getting out of Christmas presents but for people who I am friends with and I know I can make something that they could use and is a quality item, would it make it worth it?

Personally, I have always loved handmade gifts that people take their time out of their schedule and lives to make, it’s much more personal and caring than something you could just find for anyone at a store. Is this just me though?

I have one friend that tends to do handmade gifts and other than that it’s not. I don’t know why this is, too time consuming maybe. So if I’m going to do DIY Christmas gifts I have to get cracking on these presents. What does everyone think about a DIY holiday present guide if I do it?

So basically this whole post is me asking, what is the opinion on homemade presents, good or bad?

My Dorm Room!

Okay so basically there is this problem with my WordPress media that is rapidly filling up and I don’t know what to do. I wanted to share a bundle of pictures with you but since I want to save room before I have to spend $20 a year to have more room in my media library, I decided to make a room tour video. I am putting a few pictures of my dorm here, but if you want to see the ins and outs of things (of just my side obviously) click this link here!

I have some great things in my room, like for example, the afghan by Nonni made me (that’s a fancy word for grandmother if you can’t pick that up), which is very warm in the winter. Well it’s warm all the time, just especially in the winter. I also have a little bed side caddy, which just hangs off the side of my bed and is insanely handy to keep things like books, pens, notebooks, my glasses, you know like bedtime basics that might be needed. I also love my mason jars that I painted, the giant one on my trunk broke approximately two hours after I shot the video and took pictures so that’s cool. I think it’s bad karma after stealing a bagel from the dining hall. These are just a few of my favorite things in my dorm room, if you want links to any of the products let me know and I can get them to me!

So here are some pictures of my dorm room for you! And for a more detailed look don’t forget to check out that video and feel free to subscribe!

Please ignore that this says dorm tour, it was supposed to be the thumbnail, but that didn’t work either. Let’s just ignore that I failed.

Let me know your key dorm items in the comments, I’m nosy and love to know what other people keep around! Have a great day/night/time!

My 50th Blog Post!

Hello readers, today is a very exciting post because it is my 50TH blog post! This means two things, I have NO life, and I really like to procrastinate. So basically this post is just a massive THANK YOU! To you guys, all of my readers. Seriously it means a lot to me that you guys take the time out of your day to read my semi-regular posts. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The other piece of my post today is just a little bit more about what’s going on with me, I guess an update you could say.  So I just returned back to school after a wonderfully busy week off, which is why I lacked in posting. I got to see a lot of my friends, Lindsay was home, I did some filming, tired to do some vlogging, but it lacked a little bit. I really don’t know what I’m doing still with the whole transferring or staying.  It’s really confusing for me and I don’t know what to do because whatever my decision is I have to live with it for the next three years.  I think soon I’m going to start also trying some new sorts of posts but I’m just not exactly sure what yet. I kind of would like to do some DIY things because I don’t know if I’ve ever put this out there but I LOVE crafting.  I also think I’ll do hulls when I going on a big shopping spree or something along those lines.  These will both be in forms of blog posts and video posts.

So thanks again for reading all of my posts and for the general care that I seem to get from many of my readers, it seriously means so much to me. I wouldn’t have gotten to 50 posts without everyone who reads because otherwise I would’ve gotten discouraged ages ago.  I’ll keep you guys updated with my life and where everything is going, but I want to stop doing these dumbass updates all the time and do something interesting and meaningful.

Well as usual I have procrastinated wayyy too much and I have to finish a paper for tomorrow and start a paper for Wednesday. There’s a video coming your way tonight hopefully, so don’t forget to subscribe to me on YouTube!
