Why Start a Blog?

Chances are if you found this post you’re on the fence about blogging, well I’m here to tell you why you should and how it will positively impact your life.

  1. It’s fun! Blogging is a good and creative outlet for all of your thoughts that get stuck in your head. You have something to look forward to when you’re bored or have an idea and you have somewhere to put it.
  2. The people and community. I have found that the people in the blogging world and the community that they hold together is simply amazing. While I may not have my own niche community (yet) I have found some great friends and people that have turned into friends, even though I have never actually met them.
  3. Learning more about yourself and the things you love. With communities, commenters, and friends you never knew shared common interests you can learn a lot about the things you love. However, in addition, just by writing consistently you can learn a lot about yourself.
  4. Remembering to write down and document all the really cool stuff that happens to you. There are things I would forget about if I didn’t blog about them. It’s like a virtual, public diary for me. It lets me remember all of the good things that have happened over the past four years (maybe some of the bad too but that’s okay) and that knowledge can help you grow.
  5. Writing helps everything. There is proof that writing is good for you. It stops you from forgetting a lot when you get old. It’s yet to work for me, but hey, it’s worth a try!
  6. Get different opinions! Tired of hearing the same things from your friends? Well ask some internet friends, get a new perspective on a problem you feel like you have exhausted your options on. Share stories of how other opinions have impacted your decision making!
  7. Peer validation!  I mean I’m not saying I need and/or crave peer validation, but it does make me feel better about myself. It helps me from feeling as if I’m the only one facing problems and that there are other people in the same exact place as me. On the other hand, it’s also nice to know people like my blog (if I’m going to get real honest here).
  8. Simple but still creative. Making a pretty website and expressing yourself in your own way can be so simple today. It doesn’t take a lot to click your favorite theme and run with it. You can still be creative with your writing and graphics, but there are very simple ways to handle it.
  9. Simply being creative. (Get it play from tip 8 I’m hilarious) Everyone should just be creative. Take the time and energy and put it into something you love. You have something you like, make it creative and put it in a blog!
  10. Share your thoughts/views/opinions! Everyone thinks, has views and opinions, so why not share them? Why not share your love of tomatoes, fashion, being a mom, makeup, or really just love of anything. There are people out there that you never knew shared the same interests.

Share with me why you started blogging and why you stuck with it! Don’t have a blog yet? Tell me what’s holding you up!

July Birchbox

So I know this about the same time I posted the June Birchbox, however, I’ve had this and have been suing the products for quite sometime. I haven’t been good at keeping up with much of anything but here we go.

So this month I actually had six items in my Birchbox, and I’m not sure if it’s because two of the items are like a duo or if because I chose which mascara I wanted. I guess I’ll find out next month because I did choose one of the items for that as well.

The first thing in the July box is the amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo. It is supposed to have an Obilphica scent, to be honest, I don’t know what that means and I’m too lazy to Google it. However, I do think it smells slightly better than most dry shampoos. It says full size ranges from $10 to $24 and I don’t know how to do that conversion to how much this one is worth. It’s a good travel size and if I go anywhere it’ll be good for that. I already have a dry shampoo though so maybe it’s something I’ll consider in the future after that’s gone.

This is  COOLA SPF 50 Sport sunscreen in the scent mango. It smells not like sunscreen, but I don’t know if it would be a mango scent. Anyway, it’s organic so that’s cool. I only used it once and not when I was at the beach because there isn’t enough for my whole body. So I’m going to say it works, but the full size is $32 for 5 oz, which in my opinion is not worth it for sunscreen, like Target brand is good enough for me at that cost.

So I think these are meant to be like a duo, but I don’t know. The bottle on the left is the Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate which is supposed to protect against signs of aging for a radiant complexion.  You only really need a very small amount of it so it really looks about the same as it does in the picture. I’m at the age where everyone says you need to start using anti-aging products because appearently women aren’t beautiful if they don’t look young so you have to start fighting when you are young. Anyway, it’s fine. I don’t have any strong feelings for or against it. The full size is $67 for 30 mL.

The other item is the Shiseido Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate which helps blur out wrinkles and dark circles and it really did help get rid of the dark circles, however the sample was so small and not good for multiple uses. I was really surprised. The full size is $65 for 15 mL. I will probably not purchase either of these items because they are just too far out of my price range.

This was definitely one of my favorite items of the box and I did pick it. It is the Smashbox X-Rated Mascara. The mascara I have been using separates my eyelashes really well but this one adds so much volume that I didn’t even realize could improve my eyelashes. I’m always afraid of them being too long since I wear glasses everyday but this is perfect for me. The full size is $22 and I honestly might purchase it. I can use my Birchbox points so I will really consider it. My only complaint about the product is that it’s very liquidy but I think that helps it stay on better and even out over the lashes.

This is the last product in the box and also one of my favorites. It is the Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream SPF 35 in light medium. I’ve actually gotten so many uses out of this product.  The full size sells for $32 which is slightly above my price range for such products so we’ll see if I decide to buy it ever. It’s definitely like on the back burner for one day when I have money to spend on things like this. It has a lot more coverage than I would’ve thought.

That’s what I got in my July Birchbox! What did you get in yours? I’m pretty sure I like this one more than June. Also, if you’re interested in subscribing for $10 a month for some great high quality products, check out this link https://www.birchbox.com/invite/marysavrgadventures!

My First Birchbox!

title line

So I’ve been trying to get more into beauty and makeup recently. I also like to get things in the mail, so I thought maybe I should sign up for a subscription box, what’s the worst that could happen? I hate it and cancel. I did my research, and signed up for Birchbox. Birchbox is all sample sized products, however, for someone like me who is allergic to a lot of products and who doesn’t do their makeup everyday this is honestly kind of perfect. I am always using products way past their expiration date so I think that this is really just a great option. Also, if I love the products, I can review them, get points, and then use those points to buy the full priced versions.

I was actually surprised how pretty the box was itself. However, I later found out that I did not have tissue paper in mine like most people do, so I found that interesting.

If you are interested in Birchbox for yourself use my code!

These are the contents of my box (individual reviews below). I personally did not recongize any of the brands, however, I don’t have expansive knowledge on these things so I don’t know if they are really big brands.

This dr. brandt PoreDermabrasion in 0.25oz. The full size is just over 2 oz, which sells for $58, meaning this sample is about $7.25. However, I think this is about one use, maybe I’ll get two out of it.  The purpose of the product is to unclog pores and refine the appearance of them.  It can only be used twice a week max. That detail alone concerns me. However, I did use it. My skin felt softer. I didn’t notice that my pores seemed any smaller though. I would not purchase it though. It was a nice sample, not worth $58.

This is the LOC One & Done Shadow Stick in Peachy Sheen, which is from the Birchbox brand. It’s ceaseless and waterproof, and it’s definitely both of those things. This is the full size and sells on the website for $10. I would probably purchase this. I really like how it feels and how it lasts. It’s waterproof, however, it didn’t require a lot of effort to take off at the end of the day. I didn’t need an eyelid primer or with this, it’s a great product. Personally, I would probably pick a different color though. (Swatch at the end)

This is the PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing & Repairing Shampoo. The full-size retails for $22 at 8 oz, the sample is 1 oz, making it worth $2.75. It’s sulfate free and it’s supposed to soften and strengthen your hair. It smells like a hair salon, which is fine by me.  I’ll use it if I go away on any weekend trips, but I wouldn’t purchase it. I like it less than my regular shampoo. There was nothing wrong with it, but also nothing special if I’m being honest.

This product is the Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50. The three-in-one setting spray sets makeup, controls oil and has UV protection. The full-size retails for $28 at 3.4 oz. The sample size is 0.5 oz, making it worth about $4.12. I think I need to use it again before I make a real review. I think I needed to get a better coverage of my face and not walk a mile in 90 degree weather. However, inside it worked great even when I was sweating a little bit. I’ve heard complaints about the smell, it didn’t bother me at all and I’m usually really sensitive to smell.

This is the last product in my box, and it’s The Beauty Crop PBJ Smoothie Stick in the color Raisin the Roof. This is a full-sized product worth $14.95 for 0.009 oz. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but it does twist up. I thought that when I swatched it that it was going to be very sheen and a dark shade of pink. However, for me it’s almost like a nude lip as well as pretty matte. I really like this product and I would consider buying it in other shades.

Here are the swatches in case you were curious, the shade on the left is the LOC and on the right, the PBJ Smoothie Stick.

What are your favorite subscription boxes? Or what did you get in your Birchbox this month?

Box Swaps Gone Wrong?

Yesterday I was sick (still) so I was just laying around perusing through depths of YouTube, and I stumbled upon a box swap, really cool concept, well after watching about three really good box swaps, I stumbled upon something called “the worst box swap ever” well of course I had to watch it and I was astonished. People are complaining about the things they got, I found ones where people were ripped off, or the two of them were going back and forth calling each other liars, it was insane!

The one thing I understood was the ones where specific things were set to be purchased and there was a set budget, especially when you’re spending up to $500 on stuff for them and they barely spent $100. However, when there’s not a set budget, specific products aren’t purchased, then what’s the point? You shouldn’t complain that you didn’t get what you asked for if you didn’t ask for anything. Also, if things are broken that’s probably not the person’s fault, things break in the mail, especially if they’re being sent internationally. That doesn’t make them scammers or cheats.

It was really bothering me how people kept freaking out about little things like a lotion being dented, that doesn’t mean it’s unusable! I felt like a lot of people were being very ungrateful, especially people who really like the products until they found out how much the costs (usually cheaper and drugstore brands rather than high end like expected/wanted) but that shouldn’t change how much they like it. If you’re excited about something I don’t understand why it makes a difference whether or not it’s expensive, especially if there wasn’t a set budget or items.

I think for me what it comes down to is that people should just be grateful for what they have. I mean it’s one thing to get nothing or to get not even half of what you spent, but if it’s close or if you like it until you find the cost, be grateful. Don’t go on YouTube and complain about how terrible the people are, that’s not right. Let me know what you think about box swaps and box swaps gone wrong in the comments! Have any of you ever had a good or bad experience with these?

All of these items I will be reviewing today were kindly given to me from the people at influenster.com. Go there and sign up and take quizzes so you can try and get free stuff too!

Anyway I received the voxbox about a month ago (eek) and I’m finally reviewing everything today. So here goes nothing.

First and foremost Tampons. This is a 16 pack of Playtex Sport Fresh Balance prices ranging from $3.99-$4.99. These are lightly scented and for a regular flow. Personally I’m not a fan of scented tampons, so these weren’t quite what I would buy, but they suffice and get the job done.

photo 4 (17) photo (3)

The next item was Broadway Nails imPRESS Press-On Manicure. Before I had only heard good things about this product. I know the picture is really bad, but first of all I was not a fan of the flower pattern, it’s just no in my character. I also wasn’t a fan of the product which was super disappointing. The middle kept bubbling up. I would not recommend this product. The price ranges from $5.99 to $7.99 depending on whether or not it’s patterned or solid colors.

photo 2 (15) photo 3 (16)

The next product is Expert Last Lip Color in Forever Fuchsia by NYC. This is so pretty, it is nice and bright and has a nice shimmer. It also last rather long, through drinks and eating. Not quite all day like it’s advertised for but pretty long. My only complaint is that the lid doesn’t stay on through my digging in my makeup bag so it has nicks in the stick. It’s also quite a steal at $1.99.

photo 1 (19)

The next product is Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation which ranges from $4.99 to $5.49.  The shade I chose is Light Ivory number 091 and it’s perfect for my skin at the moment.  I am a huge fan of this product. It covers up most blemishes, however it highlights dry skin. Overall I really like it though.

photo 2 (14)

This is REd Rose REAL TEA Premium Water Enhancer with a retail value of $4.49. However, I have yet to try this product because I don’t like tea so I can’t really review it. I will update you on it in a little when I either gather the courage to try it or find someone to try it and let me know how they like it.

photo 1 (18)

Finally the last product, the Pilot Acroball PureWhite pen ranging from $4.59 to $7.49 depending on the package purchased. At first I thought this was going to be a regular pen BUT IT’S NOT! It’s an amazing pen. It just glides on the page and I love it. I write in a cursive/print hybrid and it’s perfect for that.

Anyway, so that’s the univoxbox, thanks for reading guys and make sure you check out influenster!

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

Updates All Around

This week has been completely exhausting, however very exciting. I started off the week with four exams and a paper due, all by Thursday. However, I was amazingly distracted by this wonderful idea I had Monday, and by Tuesday I was receiving all sorts of support, but more to come on that later. So yeah, four exams, the first full week of the semester, nothing really big happened. OH WAIT I saw Katie and Lindsay yesterday and that made me really happy. Nothing brings more joy to my heart than coffee and friends and we went to Starbucks so we had both. We also did some shopkicking at Target, can’t wait to earn my Coach bag, or a new camera! Oh I also found out that I will be getting a VoxBox, so in around a month or so there should be a good post on that! Oh I started crafting again, but you’ll see those pictures in a few scrolls. That involved an excellent trip to Target and Michaels. Two of my favorite stores with one of my best friends here at school, Zoe, we got a little out of control and we caused a bit of a scene, but none the less it was a bundle of fun. I think that’s it for this past week though.

So right now it’s supposed to be snowing and raining, however it is not, and it needs to because having tomorrow off would be absolutely incredible. This week needs to go by quickly because the second I get out of lab Friday I’m heading home for spring break. A week off is going to be quite incredible. Anyway, this week I have a lab report, group presentation, and a research paper due. This is at least a little better than last week, just a little bit more involved work that it would be nice to get a head start on tomorrow. Friday, I’m not sure what I’m doing when I get home, but Saturday is Lindsay’s birthday so I’m going to spend the day with her, Katie, and possibly Jade.  I’m just looking forward to some normal quality time with my friends rather than rushed or limited time with them.  I think that’s about it for now that’s going on in the upcoming week. I think.

New Part of Weekly Updates!

Anyway more about my exciting news that I have been so anxious to share more about with you guys! Incase you haven’t seen it here is my post on this section that is being added to my weekly updates: Blogger Convention. So first update on this situation is that I have finally named it! The name is going to be blogvention (blog+convention, so creative, I know) it will be held in the beginning of June of summer 2015 in Philadelphia. However, I am still struggling to find a partner to accomplish this huge task with. I’m just going to put it out again that I can’t do this on my own and if someone would be willing to be other half during this project I would be more than happy. Please email me at marysaverageadventures@gmail.com with any comments, concerns, or questions because I would really really appreciate any kind of help ideas, or just happy emails in general. This is something I’m really excited, but for the convention to live up to the expectations I have for it, it’s not something I can realistically do on my own. I also mentioned that I started crafting this week, well that would be to start having some sort of organizational system behind blogvention. So here are some pictures of my book that contains a few sneak peaks of ideas I have.

A beautiful sparkly cover! (Well in my biased opinion.)

Displaying image.jpeg

My first of four to-do pages, which I’m sure will be followed by many more.

Displaying image.jpeg

Just a few of the plans I’m starting to develop for the days of the convention!

Displaying image.jpeg

Obviously a lot of bloggers have confirmed they’re going ;)

Displaying image.jpeg

Sponsors are going to be a hard thing to find and they are just one of the many things I need help finding.

Displaying image.jpeg

Hopefully as I set dates in stone and make more specific plans I’ll be able to fill pages of the agenda to eventually make a program for the event.

Displaying image.jpeg

This is a place designated for any important information or papers that I might get for this event. I have a tendency to pile things, which then get lost, so hopefully this will help to prevent that problem.

Displaying image.jpeg

Just some random thoughts and ideas that may not fit into another category yet. There just little things that need more development. I think as I get closer it’ll be a good reality check to see how far I’ve taken one little idea I had whilst peeing.

Okay so that’s it for today guys, I really hope if you are at all interested in this idea that you will contact me. Seriously you can be from anywhere in the country or world and still come. This started as an idea for the east coast, but the more it expands the better. I would love any help that anyone could give. Thanks for considering to help at least, and thank you for reading!

I’m so Excited: Blogger Convention Idea! PLEASE HELP ME!

Okay guys I revealed an idea last night and the more I thought about it the more excited I got, and I really want to make this thing happen.  So incase you didn’t read until the end of yesterday’s post I flirted with the idea of starting a bloggers convention on the east coast. The more I thought about it the more I wanted to do it. So before I can start making any sort of arrangements I need interested people.  If you would be interested at this at all please email me marysaverageadventures@gmail.com or comment on this post. This is something I really want to do and I think it’s a really obtainable sort of thing. There are conventions for everything else in the world, why not blogging? Yes, there are already some, but there aren’t many on this side of the US, or geared to any sort of subject, a lot are specifically for fashion bloggers, beauty bloggers, or mommy bloggers, you get the point, there is no sort of collective one that I could find at least. So why not start one?

First of all I know this is going to take forever to plan so I’m shooting for summer 2015, probably mid June. I’m hoping I can get enough big bloggers to be on like blogger panels to make it a three day event complete with meet and greets.  So I have no idea where I want to have it. When I was looking for conventions to go to I was trying to look in the Philadelphia region so that I could commute daily, but if I’m planning the event, I’m going to have to stay overnight either way, so I’m thinking somewhere else now maybe? I’m not sure. I could really use a helper if there are any volunteers out there! So I know this is not a typical post at all for me, it is literally just a crazy idea I have, but I want to make this crazy idea a reality. So I have some questions to ask.

  1. Is this something people are interested in?
  2. Can you share this with your friends?
  3. Who would you want there?
  4. Where would you want it to be?
  5. Are you interested in helping me out?

Guys I am one hundred percent committed to this if there are people out there willing to go! Like I can’t even tell you how excited I’ve been for something that might not even happen. I know I need to make connections and get the word out there, so if this is something you’re interested in, please SHARE! It can’t happen without the power of the people. I need ideas too.

Please, please, please, get in contact with me if  you have any ideas whatsoever. If you think this is a terrible idea, I also wouldn’t mind hearing that side of things too! I really want this to happen, so please, give me input!

Sorry for a crazy idea post instead of a crazy writing post,, I’ll be back to normal promise. Please help me out, I would be so grateful!

Not Quite Fair

As a 19 year-old female who occasionally ends up buy necessities for herself I’ve come to the conclusion that prices for these items are not quite fair. I guess I should better explain what I mean and I don’t know how to do that so I’m just going to dive right into things.

  1. The average price of a box of pads is ranges from $4 to $8 based on brand, type, and how many. Trust me it is pretty hard to find any for four dollars that are going to do a decent job of actually doing anything at all.  The same goes for tampons, who actually start reaching a higher range, sometimes up to $15 dollars. However, women are not going to just decide to stop wearing these because they are a necessity, however you can still be taxed on them in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania even when shoes, clothes, and food is not. To me this is just ridiculous, these are things we NEED for obvious reasons. There is really no other option.  There is no other alternative and we aren’t about to go around without them.
  2. Next thing, bras. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been socially acceptable to not wear a bra since the late 90s early 2000s, how did I miss this trend? Seriously bras are the the most uncomfortable things ever, and they’re expensive. I don’t know how people can fork up $50 for the Victoria Secret add two cup size bras, not that I would need it anyway, but I can hardly even manage to put $15 towards a crappy Target bra that I’ll get maybe six months use out of tops. I do it anyway, because someone decided that it’s just what girls have to do. It’s just ridiculous.
  3. Okay, so makeup. Now I know this isn’t really a necessity, but I don’t know one girl over the age of 16 who owns no makeup whatsoever.  I may not wear makeup everyday but I do spend a decent amount of money on it to be honest. It’s one of those things where sometimes you just have to suck it up and try to look prettier (I say prettier because I’m sure if you’re reading this you are pretty already! I know I’m so cheesy.) to impress whoever doesn’t actually need to be impressed by this but we do it anyway. We also spend a lot of money on this practice, anywhere from $1 to $50(?) on one product depending on how upscale you’re willing to buy, and no matter how many times someone says you’re beautiful you’re still going to do your makeup when you go out or maybe even on a daily basis.
  4. Clothes in general. I have stopped buying women’s v-necks unless they’re on sale at Old Navy, but if I need like a plain white one, men’s section at Target here I come. I don’t understand why one white women’s v-neck is the same as three or four men’s, that is not gender equality people! I’m not going to pay more so my shirt goes with my curves, I mean it’s a t-shirt for goodness sakes! I cannot believe how much our clothes are in comparison to men’s sometimes. I think ever girl should look at the prices compared to one another next time she’s shopping and feel their clothes because men’s clothes are softer and cheaper! So not fair.

Okay so that’s my list for now. Go ahead and comment with your own ideas of things that aren’t quite fair for girls. Sorry I kind of went on a feminist kind of rant today. My plan days are all mixed up, maybe I’ll do better this coming week.
