Nintendo 2DS Commercial

To whom it may concern at Nintendo,

Video games are very fun, I’m am very much addicted to 2048 on my phone and in my childhood I often enjoyed playing games like Mario Brothers on my Gameboy SP, however, I think the commercial for the Nintendo 2DS is a little repulsive.  I understand that we live in a world of technology, but there comes a time that it needs to be put away and the summer is the perfect time for that. Yes, I am sitting here spending an hour or two of my day on this site alone, but I’m not writing outside, I’m only writing when my friends are around at night. I’m not playing video games deep into the night.

Our commercials should be encouraging kids to play outside not sit outside by lakes and campfires to play video games. That’s not what summer is about. Summer is about being with friends, playing make believe in the backyard, and playing Marco Polo in the pool. I am really disappointed in this advertising campaign. If I was a parent, which luck for you I’m not, I would be never buy one of those for my kids just off of principle. It’s sad to see such a large, corporate company supporting the lazification of children around the world.

So before you make your next commercial of kids watching leaves fall from their bedroom windows whilst playing on their 2DS, maybe think about that message. Instead, maybe show it raining outside, or being sick, rather than they showing kids wasting away perfect days. I guess I shouldn’t expect anything more from the post industrialized world, it’s just disappointing that kids aren’t being taught to play games and make believe and run through sprinklers on hot summer days, but rather to sit outside on video games.

Fondly,

Mary R. Milligan.

Commercial I was referring to let me know what you think about it in the comments. In case you can’t tell I’m just a little astonished that this is what we are now condoning in this country. No wonder obesity rates continue to increase.

On a side note I started 100 Happy Days today on Instagram so go ahead and follow me over there if you want to see that @mrmilligan13. Thanks guys.

XOXO,

Mary.

  1. Thank you so much for writing this. I was watching tv and saw that commercial and just became fuming mad! Why would they feel the need to push this game system by showing kids they “need” it to have fun? It shows kids in a treehouse, on a dock, and at what looks like a backyard camp out all things that promote real interaction with real people and activities, and it has the kids staring at screens and it makes me mad.

    1. I know! I was so angry. They have the means to have a perfectly fun time with everything around them. It’s so sad to see what kids “need” to have fun now.

  2. You are spot on with your observation! I just googled this topic to see if anybody else felt this way about Nintendo’s campaign and found your blog. Thank you for writing this, I hope it gets some more attention!

    1. Thank you! I thought it was such a terrible campaign. That’s not how you should advertise to an impressionable audience.

Tell me what you want, what you really really want!
